There aren’t enough hours in the day in my world. Never enough time to get everything done for my little family let alone me. Domestic bliss?? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I live in a haze of parenthood, working, encouraging an interest in health and exercise whilst resisting a deeper interest in drinking and eating. I do however, like to indulge in my passion and interest in style and fashion – but free hours at the end of the day are few and far between. This blog is my haven, my chance to step into my ‘happy place and me!!’. Just like the rest of the working Mums out there, our lunch breaks consist of catching up on emails, RSVP’ing to kids birthday parties, buying kids birthday party gifts and going to buy groceries for tonight’s dinner. Thank god my boys like pasta….boil and drain boys…. its a boil and drain night!!
It’s almost a race against the clock to see how much I can do in an hour that can also incorporate a trip to the post office as I just sold a Zara top on ebay. Yay-Yay but oh so Crazy-Crazy!
So, to no surprise, I am writing this with a desperate need to have my eyebrows groomed and my toes to look freshly painted, twinkly and sparkly. It’s a treat to have a pedicuire, but to be honest, I still don’t have the time to sit through the whole spa process. I’m the one who sits clock-watching and seat shuffling after 30 minutes. So to save the cost and looks of concern from spa staff. I often soak and paint my own toes in the late evening in the comfort of my own chaotic home accompanied by a bit of Netflix! But as I look down at my sad trotters, I see they need a good soak and whip of moisturiser. Tonight is not the night. So alas, here comes my summary of the magic of Sunshine shoes…..for when you havent painted your toes!
Summer days for me at the moment call on the likes of gladiator sandals and continue my classic crush on Birkenstocks. Both, however, require a little glimmer and glitz on my twinkle toes. These little stars listed below fly in with their superpower capes attached and shout out at me “get an extra 40 winks of sleep tonight love, you’re looking a little rough around the edges”. Here come the superstars. Thank you for the extra 40!!
Thanking you…….. Converse
Summer converse work so well. Simple, timeless and cool. Great with shorts, cropped jeans, casual dresses. Need I say more? Love mine in Ecru colour. I’m on my third pair now as I buy a new pair every couple of years. They just hit the spot. I adore them with my green cargo army jackets and jeans. They seem to be a staple of the cool French girls. I often spot them on the toes of the French girls as they are photographed trotting down the cobbled streets of Paris. They somehow are never, however, photographed licking the windows of the patisseries. Maybe that is just my collection of photographs of my visits to Paris ?? Well with my converse, I’m half way there Caroline de Maignet??!
Thanking you…… Skater shoes
Left to right: Kenneth Cole black calf hair skaters & Next leopard print calf hair skaters.
Who doesn’t love a bargain? I picked the Next skaters up from last years trip home to the UK. They were £7 in the clearance at the outlet centre! Woo hoo!! Then the black calf hair skaters came from my local Winners store, with the magical x10 red clearance stickers on, for $15. Yippee!
Still popular this summer. Most of the shops have versions in leather or fabric. Paired with cropped, rolled boyfriends and loose linen tees. Throw on your bag and Ray bans. This look can say ‘I’m too cool to care’ instead of the reality of ‘I was too tired this morning to get up on the first alarm ring’. The snooze button was hit several times.
Thanking you……..Trainers (Sneakers for the North American crew)
This year the love for Nike and Adidas has continued to float around. Street style snaps of goregous girlies parading around in their Nike Air Max with distessed denim shorts or loose dresses teamed with Adidas Stan Smiths. I have a pair of black Nikes that are lovely as they feature a nice little grey jersery trim detail. I am hankering after a pair of Stan Smiths. I tried a pair on this weekend and they have now firmly gone to the top of the ‘when I sell an ebay item’ list. I think they will work a treat with the usual suspects: denim shorts, cropped jeans, boyfriends but also work well denim skirts and dresses.
The other cool contenders for summer ‘trainers’ are the fabulously distressed but oh so cool, Golden Goose. I also am veering towards Vans high tops. Like both the black and the white versions. I’m still noticing that New Balance are keeping up with the pack. They did a great colour selection this spring with J.Crew. My friend Sarah has a beautiful pair with the colour combo of beige and a bright orange. Very cute!
Thanking you……… Brogues
Left to right: My Boden silver leather brogues- H by Hudson leather fringed brogues- Zara black stud brogues
Love my Brogues! they are perfect for the evening if I’m out for dinner with friends. My favourite buys were my Boden silver metalic brogues. They perk up any jeans for an evening and become the focal point of what I`m wearing. Tons of compliments from these baby’s. I always get a laugh from the people in my life who roll their eyes at them. Funnily enough, kids love them!! No twinkle toes necessary with these gems. A close second on the glam brogue factor are my Zara black studded brogues followed by my H by Hudson natural leather fringed brogues that wave a french flag at any outfit. Super cute with simple pretty white top and denim or a jolly good stripe. Beautiful brogues come to the rescue every time.
Thanking you…….summer ankle boots
Left to right: My Zara suede fringed wedge boot (A/W’14)- Madewell black leather Billie boots (A/W’14) Gap cognac leather ankle boots (S/S’15)
Think Isabel Marant inspired street style with suede ankle boots and flirty dresses. Boho inspired skirts with peekaboo Acne pistol boots. Cropped denim with kick ass ankles like the Billie boot from Madewell. Love my Zara brown fringed wedge boots for this. Sadly, I’m holding back the tears as I stupidly sold my Ash stone jalouse boots on ebay earlier this year and have regretted it ever since. Silly girl. What was I thinking?? I was too quick to list a ton of stuff on ebay to gather some guilt free shopping funds (god only knows what for??) but ended up selling and shipping them off to someone in Atlanta. Sellers remorse at its best. Another post, another time! Lesson learnt here: don’t sell something classic unless you really have to – and never sell anything out of season as you don’t truly know if you will wear it or not. Grrrrrrrr!
Thanking you…….. espadrilles
These beauties tick all the boxes for; denim, shorts, skirts, jeans. Personally, you know I’m going to say I adore the striped canvas ones. Found a stunning pair of animal print calf hair Zara espadrilles last week in the sale at the Montreal Zara store. Cried when they were too small and left them on the shelf to go to a better home.
Thanking you……… D’Orsay flats
Great shoe style. Looks lovely with the summer greatest hits: shorts, jeans, skirts, jumpsuits, etc.
I always appreciate a flat as I don’t have to concentrate so hard when walking after a glass of wine or two!
Thanking you… The lace up ballet flats
I love these shoes. I am of course biased (and hallucinating $$$) and desperately want the Isabel Marant laced flats. Beauties. These shoes are perfect for the au naturel toes. Look fab with cropped jeans, skirts, shorts, culottes. Every high street store is doing a version of them. Boden received great accolades for their version this summer the ‘Lille lace up flat’.
I have just scored a leather mini skirt in the zara sale which would be perfectly accompanied by these shoes. They would work well with my distressed rufty tufty jeans. They will hit the spot with my cheap Monday denim dress. These shoes are destined for a gold medal as I think they fit the bill for spring-summer-fall wardrobes. They receive gold stars for ‘cost per wear’ outfit combos. They get a fast track ticket into the capsule wardrobe. These are my picks for what is out there right now.
So there we have it. The magical list of summer shoes for when you havent painted your toes! They fit into the capsule minimalist wardobe nicely. They cover not only the Summer months but the late Spring sunny days and the Indian Summer early Fall days. The cost per wear box has a big check in it along with the style box. The Stan Smiths are next on my shopping list when I get a little ebay notification to say that I’ve sold something. If they are good enough for the clever creative designer, Phoebe Philo, then they are good enough for me. My beloved converse are looking tired. The Stans will give them a mini break. I’m also on a mission for the laced up flats. I now love a dressy shoe that is flat. Gone are my days of heels due to the fact I look like I’m walking like an orangutang and my back cries out for days after.
In the meantime, I will work on less cake and more elliptical trainer. Less wine and more water. Less ‘to do’ lists and more ‘to indulge’ lists along with finally taking some time and painting my toes. The gladiator sandals are calling me but then again, so are these amazing cowboy sandals that I spotted on the Zara website for Fall’15. A nod towards Isabel Marant and a nod towards motivating me to paint my toes. How amazing are these!!!!!
What I’m wearing today……#OOTD
Left to right:
Asos stripe woven off the shoulder top- currently on sale from £30 to £14- LOVE IT!!!!
Ray- Ban wayfarer special edition in grey
Gap denim boyfriend shorts
American eagle outfitters woven belt- little bargain for $6 on clearance rack
H by Hudson brown leather fringed brogues – happy memories of buying these shoes. They came from a lovely little shop in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, called Monty Smith. Bought them when visiting my parents at home two summers ago. Snagged a bargain at £25 in the sale for them. My Dad did his classic little laugh and a shake of his head when I presented my prize bargains “only you Flickers, only you”. Love my Dad. Love these shoes!!
I’d like to think these gems all fit nicely into the capsule wardrobe. They are the keepers. My fabulous shoes are already two summers old and hope to continue their service to the capsule wardobe for a few more years. Denim shorts will always be in the capsule along with the Ray-Ban wayfarers. I have to say, I bloody love this top!! Of course it’s a stripe but it’s also very cool and floaty. Looks great pulled down off the shoulder along with just sitting on the shoulders. It’s in the sale now so grab it if you can. In regards to cost per wear…. it will be paying me to wear it after this month is out!
Done and dusted xx
