The new skirt on the block for Spring/Summer ’16, has to be the pleated midi skirt.
When I think of pleated midi skirts, I’m personally hit with a blast from the past courtesy of the 80’s and days of the ultimate ‘Sloane Ranger’, Lady Di. My memories of the pleated midi, encompasses visions of the high neck ruffle blouse with the pleated midi. Think posh, ‘sloaney pony’, lady like and ‘oh so’ sensible.
However, with the 2016 renaissance of the pleated midi, now think contrast, edge and individuality. Now, we’re talking my language! I first fell in love with the pleated midi last Christmas when I spied the Topshop gold foil pleated midi. Sadly I wasn’t able to get my hands on it. The worst ever words to flash up on your screen……..sold out!! If you’re going to entice me ‘fashion wise’ in anyway, then make it metallic and throw in the fashion ‘risk card’ too!
The big accolade deservedly goes to Alexa Chung and her ‘Effie’ pleated midi. Chung has been the major influence in the M&S archive collection campaign. Ms Chung delved through the fashion archives of M&S collections and dug out some beauts to have us ‘ooh-ing and aah-ing’ over. Such a cool idea, well done Marks & Sparks!

The Vintage inspo
The most joyous part of writing and researching fashion trends, is discovering the history that is involved in styles too. I adore looking at how fashion trends keep returning periodically with their ‘fresh interpretation’ with each individual era it faces. I adore the shape of these 1955 pleats. Days of the tiny waist to which is flattered beyond belief with these beautiful pleats in wool. Incredible couture. Absolutely stunning!

Then we have the lovely Lady Di, who left such a huge footprint in the world of fashion and certainly fashion within the realms of Royalty. Pleated skirts, court shoes and perfectly sculptured hair. She truly was Queen of the pleats. Look at that little William!!

Oh my goodness, how Gucci is reign supreme at the moment! They cannot do anything wrong at the moment in my book and look at their fabulous pleated midi in all its glory. They effortlessly wowed the Ffrow at their Spring/Summer’16 runway shows. The colours and textures are incredible. The house of Gucci are on a roll at the moment. No wonder they have won over the love and wardrobes of Alexa Chung and Florence Welch. Bravo Gucci!!
This. This skirt. Metallic beauty of my dreams!
Bloody hell, I WANT THIS!!! This pleated leather gem instantly makes me feel happy. I adore the ‘Bowie’ red, blue and gold. Completely out of my shopping parameters. But I applaud those who can nip over to Dover Street Market in Haymarket, London and bag this beauty. Absolutely stunning!!

The High Street inspo
Admittedly as I’m caught between two fashion continents of the U.K and Canada, my shopping sources that I rely on, tend to be a select special few, consistent and never fail to let me down. These are my picks for the High Street pleated midi influencers. Some are on my doorstep and some know my credit card number and delivery address by auto fill!

M&S, not just for knickers!
How hard does it work for you?
I’m always a fan of the wardrobe items that work hard. Love their double duty efforts and ability to dress up or down at a moments notice. The pleated midi gets full marks for this. Don’t be scared of the footwear options either. It ‘plays nicely’ with heels as well as trainers along with silk blouse or a tee.
How I wear mine
I have to admit the pleated midi has completely surprised me. To start off with, I feel I possess a grand old set of child-bearing hips. I wasn’t expecting this skirt to work, but alas, it did!! I love how easy it is to wear, and it’s new season update essence of cool?! Now obviously, when it concerns myself on the shopping front, you know full well, I’m sniffing out the metallic’s, the textures and the simplicity of adding some eccentricity to my outfit combinations! My lifestyle as a working Mum means that my wardrobe needs to be washable, wearable and well……me. But when I go out to play, I’m out on a full bloody mission to be absolutely and completely ME!!!
Done and dusted….I present to you, how I wear my pleated midi skirts.
The black faux leather pleats
I bought this just before Christmas last year. I wanted something dressy but cool to work with my Bella Freud jumper and thought this would hit the spot. It’s perfect to dress up and down and what’s not to love about the idea of merely wiping off the spilled wine drops!!

Just call me Darcey Bussell!! Presenting the pleated Tulle!!
I bagged this gem in the sale. So proud to share that it was a Sam Edelman number that was originally $145 which I found with the shopping gods over my shoulder, for a mere $25!! So easy to wear with its elastic waist band, a true ‘going to a fave restaurant’ dinner contender!!! But adds a touch of evening glamour to any night out on the tiles. I wore it the other night to a fashion show event. Looked great dressed up with my Satin Souvenir bomber jacket and Bowler hat. Equally great with a jumper and trainers or tee and sandals.
