Off the shoulder tops have been BIG this spring and summer. The street style queens and bloggers have all been showcasing their shoulders via this magical top. Whether it be the loose off the shoulder tee, the voluminous blouse or the crisp off the shoulder shirt. The off shoulder moment is not going anywhere and is continuing into the fall ‘look books’ across the stores, magazines & Pinterest pages.
The Tibi tribute
The Tibi off the shoulder poplin tunic has received much accolade within the blogging world this season. Loving both the white and the black version. So simple and elegant.
I adore Tibi although these aren’t my high-end pocket money years at the moment. However, Zara have done an incredible tribute to this gem. I bought and love this. It fits nicely into the capsule wardrobe as it’s so easy to dress up and down. Thank you, Zara….$49.90 and I feel as a ‘cost per wear’ situation, it will be paying me to wear it soon! Lol
Working the off shoulder top in my wardrobe
I’m a big fan of the off-the-shoulder top. I like how versatile it is. It’s a nice little number to dress up or down.
I believe its a contender for your ‘on trend’ capsule wardrobe. Baring the shoulders, it happily skips through from spring/summer days to early fall days. A diamond when worn with a loose jacket/cardi on chilly mornings then, once the sun and heat come out in the afternoon, bingo, you are ready for the sun to kiss your shoulders and you have nailed the early fall dressing dilemma of ‘not too cold’ vs ‘not too hot’.
I like it hanging loose with a mini skirt or skinny jeans. The simple silhouette gives space to the eye for accessories. It could be a chic French inspiration neck tie scarf around your neck or wrist. It could be statement earrings, a hat or fab shoes.

Worn tucked in…….
When the off shoulder top is tucked in it takes on a different voluminous form. The perfect accomplice to the tuck is the 70’s style skirt. Loving the denim button up front skirts this season along with the leather or faux leather mini’s. They all work a treat with the tucked in off the shoulder. I’m drawn to pairing this look with sandals or flats for the sunshine. Thinking ankle boots will work well for chillier days.

I love the relaxed summer look of the off shoulder when it’s teamed with shorts. The magic combo for me are the roughed up lived in denim shorts with a delicate, simple, off the shoulder. I have owned this fabulous Diana Orving tee for a few years now. I bought if off Ebay and was one of those items that I spotted when browsing on ‘sellers other items’. I recall buying this tee and another top. It turned out that the other top was not such a big hit with me but this fabulous tee has an unconditional spot in my capsule wardrobe.
Madewell straw fedora, Diana Orving black wide tee, Gap factory boyfriend denim shorts, Topshop black ‘Hilt’ sandals.
The off shoulder top ticks the stunning box when worn simply with sleek lines. Loving the crisp white off shoulder shirt with the simplicity and sleek drape of the black culottes. Can be spruced up with accessories like a slim scarf or statement heels. However, looks just as good worn simple with cropped skinnies and cute sandals. Done and dusted!

The crop top was bang on trend this summer. You don’t have to be a skinny young Minnie to master this. I think the cropped off shoulder top is a beauty worn with high-waisted wide leg jeans or culottes.

Just wanted to mention this little gem of a top. I bought it from H&M in Covent Garden, London about 12 years ago. It’s a lovely off shoulder printed cotton tee, that I drag out every summer at some point. I always receive compliments on it and I just wanted to put it out there for a glory moment. I believe it just goes to show, if you have things in your wardrobe that you love and hold happy memories, you get to wear them 12 years later. That’s what I call a ‘good buy’!
Wearing: Apart from a young child on my shoulders and the lovely Yves Saint Laurent Perspex sunglasses, everything is old, absolutely ancient…..including me!
H&M cotton off shoulder tee (12 years old!!), gap 1969 wide leg seamed jeans (6 years old!), Birkenstock ‘Gizeh’ in nude (6 years old), YSL Perspex sunglasses
What is out there?
Shopping on a Saturday afternoon in the sales…..
Now is the perfect time to bag a heavily reduced gem in the sales. The big guns who had the best off the shoulder tops are definitely ones to check. Take a peek at Zara, Asos, Madewell & New Look. Be sure to browse in store as well as online. This is prime time for items that have been returned. You bag a bargain and your capsule wardrobe gets a transition piece that adds an ‘on trend’ tag to the foundation items in there (jeans, culottes, skirts etc)
Whose door to knock on for Autmun ’15?
Zara gets the gold medal for this season. Incredible pieces that leave you in a bit of a frenzy when working towards a capsule wardrobe. They have the best selection of off the shoulder tops in my book.
Zara white boat neck blouse $49.90
Zara denim elastic off the shoulder top $49.90
Zara knit boat neck sweater $49.90
Zara black ruffle top $29.90
H&M have a couple of pieces that caught my eye on their website. As always, I’d have to check them out in person in regards to the quality of the fabric and how this affects it’s look when worn. I can tell I’m getting old now as a quality fabric matters to me now!!
H&M star off shoulder blouse $49.99
H&M knit off shoulder top $34.99
Aritzia have a couple of lovely simple off-the-shoulder pieces. Definitely versatile to dress up and down, yet I love the simplicity of them displayed in their lookbook pics. The dress would work well in the fall too as a layering piece. Think relaxed cardigan over the top and a long style scarf with ankle boots. I’d even wear over skinny jeans and ankle boots.
Aritzia: Babaton black Rodrigo blouse $110
Aritzia: Talula Horatio dress $90
Asos also have a selection of the magical tops. These caught my eye. I still count my lucky stars daily that Asos deliver worldwide and at a very low fee too. Thank you Asos!!
Asos white woven off shoulder top $32
New look frill off shoulder denim top $32
So, there we go. My love is not fading for the off shoulder top. Come to think of it, considering the H&M 12 year old printed top, it never really did?!! It’s a nice little addition to your wardrobe that transcends nicely into early fall outfits and no doubt we will still see some twinkling shoulders next Summer too! Lastly, just had to share the joy of a summer sale bargain. The shopping fairy waved her magic wand over me this week and I found these Zara leather tan fringed sandals in my size. Could not believe my luck to bag them for $12!!! They’ve been flaunted on blogs and Instagram throughout the summer. I love them!!!! Best $12 I’ve spent in a while!
Leaving on some words of wisdom that I found floating around on Pinterest. Definitely words to dress by I reckon. I say: love a Flamingo along with a good stripe! xx
