Make way for the new Spring denim trend, well when I say new, I mean it’s been with us for the past couple of seasons but now has hit the High Street and wardrobes in a big way. I first spotted a style heroine of mine wearing them to the spring/summer 15 fashion weeks. All hail Emmanuelle Alt in her ‘she’s so bloody cool it aches’ distressed black crop flares. This fabulous new denim trend is a big-ticket winner. It dresses up and down like a dream and will happily show off your ankles whether they are hiding in ankle boots or smiling in strappy sandals. It’s the perfect touch of ‘effortless’ dressing to calm down you tailored tops and jackets yet looks right at home with your breton stripes or summer cotton tank.
The vintage inspo….
Any excuse I can find to have a good old rummage through fashion photos of yesteryear. I absolutely love this photo of the magnificent Katherine Hepburn in her cropped flares. She maybe showing off a ‘sock’ ankle that Nora Batty would be proud of but she nails the casual touch of the denim crop flare with the sheer luxe of her fur coat and silk scarf. Superb.

The Street inspo……..
Oh Alexa, another one who can do no wrong in my style book. I love how she paired her crops with metallic ankle boots yet happily teams them with flats. She can partner and pull off these crop flares with a tailored blazer one day and then grab her chunky knit the next. Her big grey coat and silk scarf lends a style wink to the wardrobe choices of Katherine Hepburn. It’s a combination that oozes sophistication and sass. Bring it on you lovely lasses!

The Alt accolade…….
Everything this style icon wears or touches turns to magic. Emmanuelle Alt, editor of the french vogue, wears this fab pair of black crop flares so well. I was applauding so loudly as I pinned frantically a ton of images of Alt wearing the same magic pair of crops. Talk about getting your cost per wear in order and your #30wears out of something. She proves the crop flares are not only the latest trend but are a capsule wardrobe contender. I love taking a new trend under my wing and then wearing it to death. This is the road we should all be going down in this day and age. Forget fast fashion and amassing a ton of clothes that suffocate us with outfit choices. My capsule wardrobe is about things I love. I love them so much that I want to wear them again and again. They shouldn’t sit and wait for a ‘special occasion’ or be in fear that they are for ‘best’ and may get ‘worn”. We should take a leaf out of Alt’s book and wear them with pride and love in the fashion moment. Who cares if they wear out after constant use? by then we will be happily in pursuit and favour of the next denim trend.
Observe how Alt pairs her crops with different textures and proportions. She is clearly wearing them across the seasons and works them so well from daytime to evening looks. From short jackets to long coats, from scrappy sandals to classic flats, from silk blouses to cotton tops. Apart from being the super chic vogue editor, she is also flying the flag for sustainable fashion choices. Every outfit announces that she is cool, she is effortless in her dressing and quite frankly, she doesn’t give a f$%& what you think! Bloody love it

Getting your hands on a pair……..
So, you need a new pair of jeans for the Spring. Your others could do with a mini break or maybe a long-term break in the garbage? Cue denim damage of some good old thigh rub, some red wine stains (I can’t be the only one, can I?) or the stretch in them has gone and I walk around with a baggy denim arse precisely 19 minutes after wearing them fresh out of the laundry basket. If you’re like me, then denim is one of my wardrobe fundamentals. I work in denim and play in denim. So where to start on getting your hands on a pair.
Waving at the crop flare $
I’m learning now to try a trend by meeting it with minimal damage to my purse. I did this in fact, last year with the crop flare jean. Back in September when the pics of Mme. Alt at the Fashion Weeks came floating under my nose, I immediately wanted a pair. I’m stuck in my comfort land of skinny jeans. I tried to brave the summer’15 Culottes but it was too extreme in style to completely win my heart. So I dug out a pair of H&M dark rinse flares I had bought in 2003. I only know this as I recall buying them shortly after my honeymoon. But it’s handy to look back and realise that classic pieces like denim are always worth holding onto. This is what one of the components of sustainable fashion is about for me. Anyway, I digress! So I chopped off the hem and wore them around a bit to see I felt anything for this new style update. This was the best move for me. It didn’t cost anything and it gave me a taster of the trend. So if yore not sure then dig out your old flares or nip to the charity shop and source a pair. Look at Alt’s fantastic distressed pair. This may be your next pair of denim update jeans you wear weekly this season?!
Flirting with the crop flare $$
I’m a big Topshop denim fan. I used to think that only designer denim labels were the ones who had mastered the stretch denim that didn’t give me a baggy arse after 19 minutes. I own lots of denim that I pick up cheap in the sale and wear to work. I work with kids and am always on the floor playing, so the knees on my jeans take a beating. I purposely have to buy it a size smaller to accommodate the fact that I know it will stretch out after a short time of wear. The problem with this approach is that for the half day I am walking like a dead stiff stick man with a huge ‘Mr Greedy’ tummy hanging over the waistband. Not a look I was intentionally going for! For my weekend denim, I adored J.Brand denim and would save up to invest in these jeans. But then as a late bloomer to Toppers denim last year, I joyfully discovered Topshop Jamie skinny jeans and have been completely hooked since. Cannot speak more highly of Topshop denim at the moment.

Investing in the crop flare $$$
So if you’re a fan of this denim update and love this trend, maybe you want to invest in it. My spider senses are telling me it will still be with us the following winter season. But right now, I cannot even utter the words “next winter” so we’ll leave it at that! I don’t think you can wrong with investment denim from MIH jeans & J.Brand.
MIH offer us the Marty crop flare this season at around $265 (U.S). Check them out here
J.brand offer up the Selena crop flare. Beautiful wash and I love how soft the J.Brand denim is. I adore my J.Brand love story jeans. True quality denim that won it way to my heart. The Selena crop flare is around $220 (U.S). Check them out here
Oh, the shoes??? My main wardrobe contenders are…..
The initial style obstacle you face when you have a pair of these crop flares in your hands, is what bloody shoes will I wear with them? As with any denim update style, you need to work with it and get to your comfort level. I love a contrast in the style stakes. I’m instantly drawn to going the opposite end of the style spectrum with pieces. I reckon the casual crop flare denim update teams well with some killer heels or pointy toes. A tailored jacket or shirt also add some sharp lines to contrast the relaxed casual denim update. An ankle boot not only covers up the goosebumps on a chilly spring morning but eases you into the crop flare for the spring season. This little crop looks great with your tailored pieces as well as your relaxed knits. Don’t discredit the flats though. Some flat Chelsea ankle boots, loafers or trainers also work a treat. Think mad mornings or rushing out of the house at the weekend. Full marks go to the crop flare with a cool sweatshirt and bomber jacket. Throw on your trainers (wink, wink, Stan Smith or Golden goose) and a swipe of Lippy! Remember the best style you can wear is the one that leaves a big bloody smile on your face and helps you conquer the day. I love a little denim update that dresses up and down like a dream. When your budget is limited or your capsule wardrobe space is minimal then the crop flare jean gets a gold shiny star from me. Simple.
Topshop has my heart at the moment. I have been a huge fan of their pieces over the last dozen collections. I got my knickers in a right twist on a recent visit home as I shopped around the Topshop flagship store, Oxford Circus, mouth wide open with plenty of “Oooooh’s” and “ahhhhh’s”. Incredible high street goodies with that magic Topshop touch that has people questioning if it is designer or not . So bear with me as I list off what I styled the cropped flare with. My mate and I actually both bought the sweatshirt but in grey and we LOVE it. She also snapped up this colour block cross grain top and looked stunning in it. Please just humour my imaginary shopping basket full to the brim with these items. Oh, and I threw in some Stella McCartney satin sandals. If we’re dreaming here, I thought I may as well go big or go home!

p.s Welcome to my world……..where the dents and scratches on wooden floors and skirting boards come courtesy of little boys spending hours on end with cars, trucks and balls. You can’t come into my home expecting pristine interiors. But you can join me and laugh as the craziness and reality unfolds watching two cheeky monkeys in action!! xxx
